December 1 @ 19:30

FitkinWall are composer/pianist Graham Fitkin and harpist Ruth Wall.

Their new album is loosely connected with ideas of migration. Migration is not a new phenomenon but has been with us for thousands of years. Ruth’s Scottish background has driven this album. The enforced eviction and subsequent migration of farmers and crofters from the highlands, as part of ‘the clearances’ which benefited wealthy Southern sheep farmers, provides the central focus. We have predominantly taken traditional Scottish tunes, performed on varying harps and reworked them completely keeping migratory ideas in mind.

Graham Fitkin composes for live performance, recordings, dance, media and installations. He works with acoustic instruments, electronic instruments and audio recordings and has won three BASCA Composer Awards, International Grand Prix Dance Music Award 2000 and the Royal Philharmonic Society Composer Award in 2015. He was previously Composer-in-Residence with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Chamber Orchestra. He has been commissioned by the Halle, BBC Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, RSNO, Athens Camerata, BBC Symphony Orchestra nd the BBC Concert Orchestra and worked with dance companies such as Wayne McGregor’s Random Dance and chamber groups such as a collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma and the Sacconi Quartet.

Scottish harpistRuth Wall performs on concert and lever harps, buzzing Renaissance bray harp and Gaelic wire strung harp. She is passionate about new music and performs with groups such as BBC Concert Orchestra, Goldfrapp, Kathryn Tickell, Sacconi Quartet and London Chamber Orchestra. Ruth has performed at venues including Berlin Philharmonic, Eden Project, Sydney Opera House, Spiral Hall Tokyo, Tate Gallery and Glastonbury as well as recording at studios including Air Lyndhurst, Abbey Road and Maida Vale.
