Formed in 2018, the Roscoe Piano Trio unites celebrated pianist Martin Roscoe, violinist Fenella Humphreys and cellist Jessica Burroughs.
With an extraordinary career spanning over five decades, Martin Roscoe is unarguably one of the UK’s best loved pianists. Renowned for his versatility at the keyboard, Martin is equally at home in concerto, recital and chamber performances. His enduring popularity and the respect in which he is universally held are built on a deeply thoughtful musicianship and his easy rapport with audiences and fellow musicians alike. With a repertoire of over 100 concertos performed or recorded, Martin continues to work regularly with many of the UK’s leading orchestras. As a prolific recitalist and chamber musician, Martin tours the UK extensively every season, including regular appearances at Wigmore Hall, Kings Place and Bridgewater Hall. Having made over 600 broadcasts, including seven BBC Prom appearances, Martin is one of the most regularly played pianists on BBC Radio 3. He has made many commercial recordings for labels such as Hyperion, Chandos and Naxos, having recorded the complete piano music of Dohnányi ,Nielsen and Szymanowski, as well as four discs in the Hyperion Romantic Piano Concerto series. For the Deux-Elles label, Martin has recorded the complete Beethoven piano sonatas, for which he received unanimous critical acclaim.
Fenella Humphreys, winner of the 2023 BBC Music Magazine Premiere Recording Award, has won critical admiration and audience acclaim with the grace and intensity of her playing. With playing described in the press as ‘alluring’, ‘unforgettable’ and ‘a wonder’, Fenella is one of the UK’s most established and versatile violinists. She enjoys a busy career combining chamber music and solo work, performing at prestigious venues and festivals around the world. She is frequently broadcast on the BBC, Classic FM, Scala Radio and international radio stations. For the launch of Apple Music Classical in April 2023, Fenella was one of a handful of artists invited to record a ‘Classical Session’ at home, alongside Daniel Barenboim, Beatrice Rana and Gautier Capuçon.
Described by critics as ‘spellbinding‘ and ‘deeply expressive’, Jessica Burroughs is equally at home as an orchestral leader, soloist and chamber musician. Alongside her position as principal cellist with Opera North, Jessica is in regular demand as a guest principal working with orchestras such as City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Royal Swedish Opera, BBC Philharmonic and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with whom she has performed as a soloist at the Royal Albert Hall, London, and as solo cellist on an Orchid Classics CD recording of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ with conductor, Barry Wordsworth. Jessica also performs regularly as a soloist and in chamber music, including with the Moricosta String Trio.
The Roscoe Piano Trio was originally formed for a performance celebrating the life of Peter Cropper who performed with Martin Roscoe as part of the Cropper Welsh Roscoe Trio for many years. The ensemble has since performed at venues including Bridgewater Hall, the Royal Overseas League and Rossall School, and at festivals including Beverley Chamber Music Festival and Ribble Valley International Piano Week.
