The triumphant winner of this year's Cannes Palme d'Or, Ken Loach's fierce, emphatic drama I, Daniel Blake is purportedly his last film.
With a script by regular collaborator Paul Laverty, it follows fifty-something Newcastle carpenter Daniel (Dave Johns) who, after suffering health problems, seeks to claim benefits but is rejected by the welfare system. Labelled a scrounger when he’s anything but, Daniel befriends Katie (Hayley Squires), a single mother who’s also on the breadline. Almost painfully moving, it’s a stark reminder of injustice in contemporary Britain and a fitting end – if indeed it is – to Loach’s astounding career.
