This superb, nuanced directorial debut from screenwriter James Schamus (best known for his artistic partnership with director Ang Lee on Brokeback Mountain; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon etc) adapts Philip Roth's 2008 novel.
Set in 1951, it’s inspired by Roth's college years, exploring the oppressive conformism of post-war America –still segregated and full of sexual repression – with evocative precision. Idealistic Marcus (Logan Lerman) leaves his Jewish family home in Newark for college in Ohio, avoiding the Korean War draft. Clashing with the imposing Dean (Tracy Letts) and drawn to his beautiful classmate (Sarah Gadon), he’s torn between worlds in a society on the brink of vast and powerful change.
