Denial (12A)

Dir: Mick Jackson | UK/USA | 2016 | 110 mins

Rachel Weisz is superb in Mick Jackson’s impactive courtroom drama Denial as Jewish American historian Deborah Lipstadt, based on the true story of her legal conflict with notorious Holocaust denier David Irving (Timothy Spall) in 1996.

Adapted by David Hare from Lipstadt's own book, it depicts the libel case brought by Irving against her, forcing her to prove the essential truth that the Holocaust occurred and so create a landmark legal precedent. Full of excellent performances (from Tom Wilkinson and Andrew Scott as well as Weisz and Spall), it’s an essential tale for our ‘post-fact’ times, documenting a pleasing and necessary triumph of truth and reason over ignorance, prejudice and lies.
