This beguilingly atmospheric debut follows 11-year-old tomboy Toni, a Cincinnati schoolgirl who while training at the gym, becomes entranced by a performing dance troupe. Joining them, she struggles to fit in; absorbing complicated routines and drills and even piercing her own ears to assimilate. But she finds herself endangered when the group begins to suffer from a mysterious outbreak of fainting spells and other violent fits, and her desire for acceptance is twisted.
A poetic, sensual and immersive story, it’s a parable about the struggles girls face – to please and perform – as they change, body and soul, into women.
