20th Century Women (15)

Dir: Mike Mills | USA | 2016 | 118 mins

Annette Bening gives a standout performance in Mike Mills’s (Beginners) acclaimed, Oscar-nominated (for Best Original Screenplay) and immensely pleasurable drama about three women exploring love and freedom in the late 1970s.

The scene is Santa Barbara, 1979, with freethinking, independent-minded single mother Dorothea (Bening) seeking the help of would-be photographer Abbie (Greta Gerwig), mellow handyman William (Billy Crudup) and young, shrewd Julie (Elle Fanning) to raise her son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann) in her enormous house, which is under constant renovation and open to all. A love letter by Mills to his mother, it’s a vastly enjoyable film, beautifully written and performed.
