Dir: Xavier Dolan | Canada / France | 2016 | 99 mins | subtitles
Mommy director Xavier Dolan's It's Only the End of the World boasts a fantastic ensemble cast. Gaspard Ulliel is writer Louis; Nathalie Baye his whimsical mother; Léa Seydoux his punky sister; Vincent Cassel his volatile brother Antoine and Marion Cotillard, Antoine's wife.
Adapted from Jean-Luc Lagarde’s play, it follows Louis as he returns to the troubled family home with a secret to share. Their reunion is something like a volcanic eruption, as Dolan exploits dramatic power and claustrophobic nature of dysfunctional familial love, and the difficulty – perhaps, impossibility – of maintaining such fraught relationships. An effortlessly cinematic tour de force with superb performances.
