Moonlight (15)

Dir: Barry Jenkins | USA | 2016 | 111 mins

The multi Oscar-nominated Moonlight is a revelation; the film of the year. Directed by Barry Jenkins (Medicine for Melancholy), it tells its beautiful, vital and devastating story in three acts.

Young African-American boy Little (Alex Hibbert) lives in Miami with his crack addict mother (Naomie Harris), faces homophobic bullying at school and befriends local drug dealer Juan (Mahershala Ali). As a troubled teenager, Chiron (Ashton Sanders) he lashes out, as an adult (Trevante Rhodes) he dreams of reconnecting with a lost love (André Holland). Aesthetically striking and viscerally powerful, Moonlight is a breathtaking achievement and surely a landmark in the portrayal of blackness (especially black gay masculinity) onscreen.
