Local History Talk 2 with Alfred Jenkins MBE

‘Wagons to Wheelbiers’.

Reminiscences of a Shropshire Lad.  Alf was born in an isolated pub on Clee Hill, built for quarrymen and miners.  His father was the publican, a skilled wheelwright, carpenter, undertaker and small holder. From a small boy, he watched his father’s skilful hands and learnt his crafts.  Life was very full, never having time to be bored.  He was obligated to entertain men in the bar, help his father make coffins and deliver them to isolated homesteads which often had no stairs.  Winters were harsh and modern amenities non-existent.  He spoke the local dialect fluently and has detailed knowledge of its development. On being admitted to Ludlow Grammar School his history master asked, “Were you born in a cave?”
