Under the Tree (15)

film-friday-banner.png

When Baldvin (Sigurður Sigurjónsson) and Inga’s (Edda Björgvinsdóttir) next-door neighbours complain that a tree in the couple’s backyard casts a shadow over their sun deck, what starts off as a typical spat between suburbanites soon spirals violently and unexpectedly out of control.

As the dispute with the neighbours intensifies, property is damaged, pets mysteriously go missing, security cameras are being installed and there is a rumor that the neighbour was seen with a chainsaw.

Director Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson leads viewers into decidedly bleak territory, which is leavened by sly intelligence and a surprising sense of humor.

“Sigurdsson has crafted an exhilaratingly sly dark comedy about ordinary suburbanite folk going from unglued to unhinged to ultimately undone.”
