The King and the Composer (Arcadia 2018)

ARCADIA_Logo_dated_2018-WEB.jpg

As part of Arcadia 2018 – JS Bach A Celebration – this fully illustrated talk will unpack and unravel the mysteries and circumstances of Bach’s The Musical Offering, perhaps one of his greatest works.  With the Arcadia ensemble playing excerpts from the work – given a full performance on Sunday 7th Oct – the talk will examine how Bach’s famous but uncomfortable meeting with the young King Frederick of Prussia stung the composer to a dangerous rebuke of the King’s aesthetic.  As is well known the King gave Bach a theme to improvise on but was this theme spiked? Was he trying to humiliate the ageing composer? Come along and find out…

Festival Deal: £15 for one concert, £25 for two concerts, £35 for three.  Whole festival including talk, £40

This event is held in Oscars at Ludlow Assembly Rooms
