Beginning with two American hikers losing their way on the Yorkshire moors, An American Werewolf in London provides one of horror cinema’s most perfect balances of laughs and scares.
Two American college students David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne), on a walking tour of Britain are attacked by a werewolf that none of the locals will admit exists. David survives with a bite, but Jack is brutally killed. As David heals in the hospital, he’s plagued by violent nightmares of his mutilated friend, who warns David that he is becoming a werewolf.
When David discovers the horrible truth, he contemplates committing suicide before the next full moon causes him to transform from man to murderous beast. Director John Landis’ film is an excellent, seamless melding of comedy and horror, with a surprising amount of brutality and one of the most wonderfully dark, abrupt conclusions ever made and the man-to-wolf transformation scene is still a marvel.
