A Venetian Vespers - music by Monteverdi and his contemporaries.
The Ludlow Summer School choir and orchestra with soloists from The Lacock Scholars
Conductor: Justin Doyle, principal conductor of the Berlin Radio Choir
The basilica of San Marco at the time of Monteverdi was a musical establishment of unprecedented splendour. The best singers, players and composers were attracted there from all over Italy and beyond. It could call on a choir of thirty men and boys and up to twenty virtuoso players of cornetts, sackbuts, strings and organs. These sumptuous forces allowed gorgeous sonorities we associate with Venice and practice of dividing the choir to sing in different parts of the building, surrounding the listener with sound. The Summer School now attracts musicians from all over the UK and Europe as well as North America and Australia.
Tickets are £10 each and the event is held at St Laurence's Church
