Red Joan (12A)

In a quiet suburban village, Joan Stanley (Dame Judi Dench) is enjoying a peaceful retirement. When MI5 turn up on her doorstep and arrest her, it is revealed she has been hiding an incredible past as the KGB’s longest-serving British spy.

As a student in 1930s Cambridge, young Joan (Sophie Cookson) falls in love with seductively attractive Russian saboteur Leo Galich (Tom Hughes). Through him, Joan begins to see that the world is on a knife-edge and perhaps must be saved from itself in the race to military supremacy. Post-war and working in a top secret nuclear research facility, Joan is confronted with an impossible question: Would you betray your country and your loved ones, if it meant saving them? What price would you pay for peace?

Inspired by an extraordinary true story, Red Joan is the taut and emotional discovery of one woman's sacrifice in the face of incredible circumstances. A woman to whom we perhaps all owe our freedom.

This event is screened in Oscars and spaces are limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
