The Women in Shakespeare’s Family

Fri 13 Feb
A 60-minute talk by Clare Smout

If you enjoyed ‘Hamnet’, come and find out more about the historical figures behind the women in the film.  This talk looks at what we know about Shakespeare’s mother and wife, his sisters and daughters, separating the fact from the fiction. It then goes on to consider in what ways those women can be said to have influenced his writing.

Clare Smout is a locally-based Shakespeare specialist. She spent the first half of her career in professional theatre, the second in academic research and teaching. Clare has taught Shakespeare to students of all ages, including at the University of Birmingham and the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Continuing Education. She runs regular Saturday Shakespeare sessions in Studio 2 at the Assembly Rooms and has been giving talks at Ludlow’s Castle Bookshop since 2024.

Please Note: this is a version of a longer talk give in at the Castle Bookshop and elsewhere on the ‘Women behind Shakespeare’s Success’, which covers both his family in Stratford and those who influenced his work and career in London.
