Wood Engraving Workshop with Julia Timmins
Join Julia Timmins, Chair of the Society of Wood Engravers and a printmaker whose work appears in collections across the UK and abroad, for a full day of hands-on learning in this intricate and rewarding art form.
Working from her Shropshire studio, Julia creates finely detailed prints inspired by the surrounding landscape, and in this workshop, she’ll guide you through the same traditional techniques she uses in her own practice.
Wood engraving is a precise and expressive method of relief printmaking, often described as drawing with light. Using specialist tools, you’ll carve delicate lines into end-grain boxwood (or similar hardwood), ink the surface, and print your own small, detailed image.
This intensive one-day workshop is ideal for complete beginners as well as those looking to develop their skills. You will:
- Learn about engraving tools and how to handle them safely and effectively
- Practise a range of mark-making techniques
- Explore the principles of designing specifically for engraving
- Prepare, engrave, and print your own 2 × 3 inch block
The course cost includes a practice block, a small engraving block, and full use of tools throughout the day. 10am – 4.30pm (lunch break at around 1pm).
To make the most of your time with Julia, please bring a prepared image suitable for engraving onto a 2 × 3 inch block.

Duration: 390 mins
