Wood Engraving Workshop with Julia Timmins

July 6 @ 09:30

Wood Engraving Workshop with Julia Timmins

Julia Timmins is an accomplished wood engraver with work held in public and private collections both in the UK and abroad. Julia is Secretary and Vice Chair of the Society of Wood Engravers. Working from her Shropshire studio she produces intricate prints which are often inspired by the surrounding countryside.

Wood engraving is a very fine, precise method of relief printmaking used to produce small, highly detailed images. Lines are cut into end grain boxwood or a similar close-grained hardwood with traditional tools. The surface of the block is then inked with a roller and an impression is taken from the surface. Wood engraving is often referred to as drawing with light; the marks made on the block don’t receive ink so form the light areas in the finished print.

This is an intensive one day workshop suitable for beginners or those wanting to build on their skills. You will learn about engraving tools and how to use them and take time to practice mark making. The workshop will cover the principles of design for engraving; you will prepare your design and engrave and print a small block. Cost: £95 (includes a practice block, a small block for engraving and the use of engraving tools for the workshop)

To allow for more time to learn the principles of engraving you will need to prepare an image to engrave onto a 2 x 3inch block.
