Brixham Chimes

November 15 @ 7:30 PM

Brixham Chimes

Brixham Chimes’ is the story of our relationship with a disappearing natural world. ‘Brixham Chimes’ is a novella in verse: it is magical, beautiful, thought provoking and, above all, changes the way you see small communities and our relationship with the natural world – forever.

‘Brixham Chimes’ is set amidst the landmarks and characters of Brixham – South Devon’s historic fishing port. It rings with a universal resonance for all rural and coastal communities. The story spans past, present and future and is brought vividly to life in performance by the evocative music of South Devon composer Tim Harris.

‘Brixham Chimes’ is a long-form poem of a lie and its consequence – that we can take, take and take some more without undoing the world. At the heart of the book sound the ‘chimes’ warning of the loss of connection between ourselves and the sea. The story exposes the fallacy of a modern world obsessed with mechanical extraction at any cost.

‘Brixham Chimes’ is an immersive performance with live music. It is followed by an audience Q&A on issues faced by coastal and rural communities and our fragile ecosystems. Its author, Jim Funnell, is an educator, campaigner, poet and creator of Sky Atlantic’s TV series ‘Fish Town’. Tim Harris is an avant-garde composer who creates improvisational cinematic soundscapes.
The show incorporates a projected film sequence which contains some flickering images.
