Exploring Shakespeare’s Tragedies: Introducing Elizabethan Tragedy + Titus Andronicus (repeat)
Participatory Study Event – Led by Clare Smout (3 hours)

*** Please note this is a REPEAT session. ***

What did people expect of tragedy when Shakespeare started writing? How far did he follow or reject contemporary fashions? What was his first tragedy like? This participatory event starts with a talk on early Elizabethan tragedy, outlining the influence of Roman tragedy and the ground-breaking work of Christopher Marlowe and Thomas Kyd. After a break for coffee and cake, we’ll explore Shakespeare’s first experiment in the genre, Titus Andronicus, which wowed his original audiences and influenced his later plays such as King Lear.
The session will include group discussions and video clips showing a variety of interpretations. These events are suitable for those aged 18 and over.

Clare Smout is a locally-based Shakespeare specialist. She spent 20 years in professional theatre, before moving sideways into academic research and teaching. Clare has taught Shakespeare to students of all ages, including lecturing at the University of Birmingham and as a guest tutor at the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Continuing Education.

This is part of a series of five sessions on Exploring Shakespeare’s Tragedies. These are stand-alone sessions. Come to as many or as few as you wish.
