(le) PAIN
September 14 @ 7:30 PM
This show is brought to you in collaboration with Ludlow Food Festival
(Le) Pain by Jean Daniel Broussé
Jean Daniel Broussé will not follow his father, or his father’s father or his father’s grandfather into the family bakery. The boulangerie story has ended.
Jean Daniel Broussé (JD) studied Medieval History and Modern Literature in France and then Circus Arts in London. He worked with Square Peg, Barely Methodical Troupe and Ellie Dubois AND he co-created KNOT with Nikki which won many awards and international acclaim.
JD is not going to bake cakes. Or Bread. The family bakery has been sold.
(le) Pain is about breadmaking, physical heroics, growing up queer in a boulangerie in the south of France, endings and new beginnings. It involves circus, dance, storytelling, Béarnaise folklore video, karaoke and laughter.

“The title of Jean-Daniel Broussé’s solo show is a pun on the French word for bread and, of course, the English word for suffering. Over 55 minutes, Broussé – or JD, as he calls himself – gives a practical demonstration of how to make baguettes while sharing the pain of having to choose between continuing the family business or becoming a performer. A batch of lively scenes, devised and developed by JD with director Ursula Martinez, deploy dance, music, film and acrobatics to tell the story, in this fourth-ever performance (not all are oven-ready).”
